May 05, Jessica rated it really liked it. From the description, and what I've read, it comes across as a sort of zombie apocalypse novel, with the breakout related to massive changes in weather patterns.
Whether or not that holds true, or a twist reveals things to be different than they seem is as yet to be determined, as this installment leaves you with a cliffhanger. I really enjoyed the characters, most particularly the heroine, Gabrielle. The story is told from her point of view, and she has a great voice.
She relays the story in a way that makes me feel like I could be her friend and she'd be telling me what happened over some cold beers. Casual, but keeps things both interesting and entertaining. I also really liked the character of Lane.
The Big Bang Theory season 12 spoilers: ‘I’m mad’ Fans ANGERED by ending despite twist
There are some not so subtle hints at a love interest brewing between Gabrielle and Lane, best friends since early childhood. I hate to tell Gabrielle, but if she doesn't want him, I will take him! Definitely "book boyfriend" material. One negative There are a lot of other characters involved, primarily the group of community service kids that Gabrielle and Lane work with. They work in construction and the kids become their employees, learning a trade, and getting clean, or whatever they need to do to get on their feet, and if they stay in the program long enough, they become crew leads.
These characters each have their own personalities and things going on, and I really liked each of them, but at times, it did feel like there were almost too many for the story and I had trouble keeping track of who was who.
The Worst Birthday Ever (Angered Seasons, #1) by Mireille Chester
The story has an intriguing premise, and although the whole zombie apocalypse thing is being done to death no pun intended lately, the story was fast paced, and had enough action, as well as character development, to make me want to keep reading. I think that's the main hurdle in writing a zompoc story these days - the plot and action may be similar from story to story, but it is what you do with the characters that will determine if people continue to read the genre after they've "been there, done that", and I think the author does a great job with this. Overall, I really enjoyed the story.
I look forward to reading the next installment, and I would definitely recommend it to a friend looking for a fast paced, action filled read. Reading the blurb, you know that you 19re going to experience a story of friendship through an apocalypse setting, but I was still pleasantly surprised when things got going. Nothing about this story is quite what you 19re expecting, from the weather anomalies to the character relationships.
The excitement, whether it be normal human emotion or action on the city streets, is ever present and you 19re left wanting to do nothing but turn the page and keep reading. I have two complaints about this Reading the blurb, you know that you 19re going to experience a story of friendship through an apocalypse setting, but I was still pleasantly surprised when things got going. I have two complaints about this book though.
The book is too short and closes with a cliffhanger ending. These complaints result in the same notion. You can put money on the fact that I will be watching for the next installment! An exciting beginning to a new series full of mystery, action, and human emotion that will keep you enthralled until the very last word, and leave you clamoring for more!
