They include great views of Lake Superior, waterfalls, weird rock formations, former portages and much, much more. I'm looking forward to tackling a number of them this summer! Apr 20, Greg F. Shelves: outdoors. Another exceptional from the author. The trail descriptions are easy to follow and full of interesting facts regarding their geology, wildlife, history, botany and more. He's mainly written about Wisconsin, so I hope this book doesn't mean his future books will shift away from my home state! Great guide, especially for inexperienced day hikers.

Just started reading this book but at about a fifth of the way in and after having paged through it, I can say it stands up to the same high quality of this author's other hiking guides. There are an incredible number of trails listed, a diverse array of them are featured so you find out which are the best ones in a region to see waterfalls, wildlife, wildflowers, and geological formations, and the writing plus trail directions are easy to follow.

My own nitpick is the book includes a small "bonus" section that is a how-to guide to hiking - it's well-written but included in all of his other books. I guess for those who haven't read those titles, the how-to guide is great I certainly enjoyed it in the first book of his I read , but I wish in this book even more trails were described in place of the how-to section!

Oh well, I guess for the novice hiker, the section is useful and beneficial. View 1 comment. Apr 16, Greg F. While I knew the Wisconsin Northwoods offered beautiful scenery as so many cars with Illinois license plates heading through my town bear out , I never really realized how much it had to offer until I read this book.

This book definitely has given me trails to fill up my weekends for at least the next couple of years. I live in Northwest Wisconsin and hike every week. This book is just what I was looking for - a guide to dozens of trails within easy driving distance from my cabin.

If you're traveling to Northwest Wisconsin - day tripping or vacationing - this is the only decent trail guide out there.

May 17, Joanne Vruno rated it it was amazing. I love Rob Bignell's hiking guides, they are so descriptive that one feels they are experiencing the trail before they actually do. Looking for a new collection of trails to explore, I hit the jackpot with this book. If you live in Minnesota, Wisconsin or western Ontario - or if you're looking for a great summer vacation - this book lists more day hiking trails and outdoors sights in northeast Minnesota, specifically along Lake Superior, the St. Croix River and part of the Iron Range. I know there are more trails than are listed in the Boundary Water and Superior National Forest, but there are plenty here to keep me busy for a few summers! Sep 29, Shaun rated it it was amazing. Picked this up in preparation for a trip to the North Shore of Minnesota to do some fall colors hiking. It was incredibly useful and well put together. It's divided into area based on towns in Northeast Minnesota and also has a great index to look up individual trails. It helped me plan my trip and decide which trails would be best by also giving the reader a total distance for each hike.

That was immensely useful for planning.

There was a bit of interesting history about each of the areas as we Picked this up in preparation for a trip to the North Shore of Minnesota to do some fall colors hiking. There was a bit of interesting history about each of the areas as well, which is always a welcome addition to any guide book.

Overall, really glad I picked it up and I'll definitely be using it again and again. Jan 31, Greg F.
